Psst. Psst! Mate, do you know what you're doing to yourself? Are you a jellyfish? You do know you have bones, right? Bro, you need to check yourself before you wreck yourself! You could get carpal tunnel syndrome, repetitive strain injury, a rotator cuff injury, tennis elbow, back pain, eyestrain, and headaches. You seriously need to learn how to sit at a desk! First of all, hands on the keyboard. Now, you want your elbows at right angles, straight wrists, arms at your side, and shoulders chilled. Yeah, you're gonna need a decent chair. Get one you can move until your arms are right. Check your legs, though. Your knees should be 90 degrees and your feet flat. So your desk is too low, bro… Of course, if your legs were shorter, you would've needed a footrest, instead. But that's not you, big guy. Now, you're gonna need some support for that back – it's supposed to bend the other way… Your neck and upper back, you want upright, though. Imagine there's, like, a balloon tied to your head. Comfortable? Right, let's sort your gear. You want to be looking straight ahead, so get the top of your screen just above your eyeline. You also want it right in front of you. If you're packing two screens, you want them as close as possible, and at the same height. If you've got a favorite screen, put that in the middle, and angle the other one toward you. If you use both a lot, center them and angle both toward you. Now: back to that keyboard. Unless you use the number pad, like, a lot, you want the B key right in front of you – that'll keep your arms straight. As for the mouse, get one that feels good in your hand, you know? Relaxed. Natural. You want that mouse close, too – don't be reaching for it. Do you even need that number pad? Then get a keyboard without one. Sorted! Just one last thing… Get up! You can't sit there all day bingeing box sets – you need to move! Get up and walk around sometimes! Sorted, mate. Chairman, out. © 2022 Mind Tools
