Welcome to Mind Tools’ Video Learning Series. We're all different – because of who we are, where we come from, what we believe in, and how we live our lives. But we all have value as people. Mutual respect is about recognizing that value. It involves appreciating people's unique contributions, understanding differences, and celebrating diversity – but also capitalizing on common ground. In a mutually respectful workplace, all team members can work freely and creatively, for the good of themselves and the organization. A culture built on mutual respect begins with a zero-tolerance approach to disrespect – particularly toward discrimination. Disrespect undermines team cohesion and reputation, and includes any kind of rudeness, hostility or discourtesy. You can boost mutual respect by helping your team to get to know one another, and to become more informed about their preferences, values and beliefs. Encourage your team to share experiences and aspects of their personal and cultural lives. But don’t force the issue – mutual respect only grows in an atmosphere of trust. Good manners demonstrate your respect for someone. Understand how people want to be treated and adjust your behavior accordingly. If in doubt, ask them! Remember that not everyone works in the same way. In a culture of mutual respect, managers should encourage people to find the approach that suits them best – and which doesn't negatively impact your team and organization's goals and objectives. Clear boundaries are key to a professional and respectful workforce. Guard people's rights, and recognize when others may have crossed the line. It’s not appropriate to share everything with your co-workers, so consider your words carefully and be alert to any particularly sensitive topics. Diverse teams are rich in experience and opinions. But this can also mean that they require a more active management style. So, be a role model for respect. Demonstrate the behaviors you want to see, and lead others to take a positive and principled stance toward respect for all.
