Welcome to Mind Tools' Video Learning Series. The first time you meet someone, it takes just a glance for them to start forming an opinion of you. First impressions count. And we often only get one chance to make them. In this video, we'll look at five things you can do to make a great first impression. First off: be punctual! When you're meeting someone face to face for the first time, allow for any potential delays when planning your journey, and make sure you set off early. If you're meeting someone virtually, test your equipment – including your mic and camera – beforehand, to check it's all working correctly. Think about what you'll wear, too. Context is everything here. If you're meeting someone in the creative industry, the dress code is likely to be more relaxed than if you're meeting someone who works in corporate finance. A good rule of thumb is to imagine what the person you're meeting will likely be wearing. And remember that dress is also culturally influenced – so keep in mind that different countries and cultures will have different expectations. Your attitude shines through in everything you do. So, try your best to stay relaxed and positive, even in the face of criticism or nerves. Pay attention to your body language as well – this can often have as big an impact as your words. So, stand or sit up tall, smile, and make eye contact. This will project an air of confidence, and help both you and the other person to feel more at ease. Finally, remember to give the person you're meeting 100 percent of your attention. Set aside your phone and avoid getting distracted by other people or other things. Good manners and attentive, courteous behavior are essential for making a great first impression – anything less might even be considered rude. When you meet someone new for the first time, it can be daunting. But by following this advice, the first impression you make is bound to be a great one.
