- Welcome to Mind Tools Video Learning Series. If you've suffered a devastating loss, getting back to work may be the last thing on your mind. You certainly need time to deal with powerful and complex emotions, but when you are ready, work can provide a much needed sense of routine and be a source of strength and support. In this video, we'll look at six ways to help you get back to work and be kind to yourself. First, communicate with your manager. Let them know what's happened and what you need. For example, you may need time away from work and you may have some suggestions on how your responsibilities can be divided among the team both while you are away and for a period after you return. Get support from colleagues. It's your choice how much to tell people, but don't miss out on this potential source of strength and practical help. In some situations you may find it easier to have a trusted friend, speak to others on your behalf. Know your rights. The length and availability of compassionate leave varies between organizations and locations, so find out where you stand. Your employer may offer various levels of flexibility, such as working from home. Concentrate and organize. When you're grieving, it's natural to have difficulty focusing on the demands of work, so make the most of To-Do lists, leave yourself extra reminders for important tasks, and don't be afraid to ask people to prompt you. Find a sanctuary. Don't be surprised if your emotions seem to overwhelm you at times. Find somewhere quiet and private that you can retreat to, until you feel ready to face other people again. Develop resilience. Give yourself time to adjust, adapt, and regain your strength. Stay in touch with your HR department, your doctor, and other appropriate professionals. However bleak things may seem, remember that your feelings will change with time.
