Avoiding Burnout at Work! Are you constantly tired, disengaged, unmotivated, and demoralized? Do you frequently snap at colleagues, and feel there are never enough hours in the day? If so, you might be suffering from burnout. Burnout is a mixture of exhaustion, and long-term disillusionment. The American Institute of Stress estimates that job stress costs U.S. industry $300 billion a year, and a quarter of American people think their jobs are the number one stressor in their lives. [1] Burnout can cause low productivity, high absenteeism, and even health problems such as depression. [2] So how can you avoid burnout? Work With Purpose Look at the deeper human impact of what you do. How can you reconnect with this and add more meaning? Take Control Use a to-do list or an Action Program to manage your work. Rationalize Your Workload Identify tasks you can delegate or eliminate, and learn how to manage conflicting priorities. Exercise Regularly Get up earlier, and exercise before work. Learn to Manage Stress Keep a stress diary, try relaxation techniques, and practice positive thinking. Give to Others Enjoy performing "random acts of kindness."
