Welcome to Mind Tools' Video Learning Series. Successful organizations don't stand still. They're always looking for new ways to innovate and grow, and everyone that works for them, whatever their role, is encouraged to take part in that process. In this video, we'll look at some of the practical steps you can take to create a culture of innovation where you work. Doing this can have many benefits. It can lead to more efficient operations, increased sales, and better products and services for your customers. At the heart of innovation is curiosity. So, start by asking yourself and your team members, "Why?" and "What if... ?" questions about your work. For example, why do you do something a certain way? And what if you did it differently? Of course not all the ideas you come up with will work. In a truly innovative workplace, ideas are analyzed carefully and only the best ones are given the green light. But everyone can learn to be more curious and more creative. Here are four steps to boost innovative thinking at work. First, form problem-solving teams. People are often more creative when they work together, but they also need to have a clear direction. So, keep them on track by tasking them with solving a specific issue. The best ideas don't always come from the top, often it's the people doing the hard work, day in and day out, that have the greatest light-bulb moments. So, encourage them to share their ideas by setting up a suggestion box and make it clear that every idea is valued. When someone does contribute a great idea, reward them. People will want to stay creative when they know their efforts are appreciated. If you can, allow people to work flexibly across the business. Let them share jobs or work with different teams. This will allow them to gain different perspectives and spark innovation. But, remember, innovation doesn't just mean having ideas for the sake of it. Be sure to keep your business needs and objectives firmly in mind, and only pursue ideas that will improve how you work or what you have to offer.
