How to Cope With Change Finding Your Way Through Unsettling Times When you have change imposed on you, you may try to... "escape" the situation... or "control" it. No matter your method of coping, you will likely react to significant change in these 4 stages... 1. Shock. Big changes can feel like a physical blow. You may feel numb, or even exhausted. But if you can, be brave and look at the situation objectively by gathering the facts. 2. Anger and Fear. As the shock subsides, it's normal to feel angry or fearful about your future. Don't hide your feelings from your colleagues, but make sure you don't let negative feelings get the better of you. 3. Adjustment. Change is inevitable, and eventually you will need to commit to moving on from the past. Try to find the silver lining in your situation. Acknowledge that this stage will take time. 4. Acceptance. Finally, you will be able to move on and accept your new circumstances. Set yourself goals and aspirations for your new reality... ...You never know where they might lead you! Change can make you feel like you're "up the creek without a paddle." You are not alone, so don't forget to seek support. © 2022 Mind Tools by Emerald Works Ltd.
